Help and Advice for Teachers: Big Deep Dive & The Progression of Key Skills

Often when the structure of education evolves the changes that we teachers are required to implement can leave teaching staff with many questions. It is of course the natural desire of all teachers to deliver high quality education but compliance with the latest standards in this ever-changing profession can be a constant challenge.

Recently a cursory glance through the comments section of an online teacher’s forum, has shown me there appears to be some degree of confusion and uncertainty among my fellow professionals regarding the implementation of the new Big Deep Dive initiative with many questions being asked and appeals for help such as; where to find resources for skills progression map for PE? How do I implement this? And even; Where do I start?

Solutions for teachers implementing The Big Deep Dive

For this reason, I wanted to provide some help and direction for those who are struggling to make sense of the slightly abstract nature of the official directive.

When I originally devised the lesson plans and resources for Primary PE Planning for each year group Early years (KS1) through to Years 6 (KS3), I mapped out how the key skills would progress during the school year. Consequently, when the big DEEP DIVE came into effect PPP was ready and I didn’t have to plunge to deep to create a skills progression document- as it was already embedded in my lesson planning.

It’s so important that the skills are developed from Early Years and KS1 through fundamental skills to progress onto more specific skills in KS2. Which is shown clearly on our progression of skills documents.

Time saving tips for The Progression Of Key Skills

One of my aims when teaching PE and aspect that I regard as particularly important, is not to move on too quickly (We do this far too much in Education now!) PPP lesson planning is structured in such a way so that new skills are learned gradually and embedded through repetition, so that each child becomes confident in the acquirement and development of new key skills as they gently progress through the curriculum. This confidence has helped my students to reach their maximum potential by promoting a positive attitude and overcome nervousness when approaching new modules which they may have otherwise regarded as challenging.

As a teacher and subject leader of PE – I found that organising my PE curriculum and inputting curriculum units for the academic year could be time very consuming. As important an undertaking as this is, I could not shake the feeling that energy spent on administrative tasks was energy I was unable to devote to helping my students develop to their potential and so to create a tool to help streamline this process. The result, our new drag-and-drop curriculum mapping tool, minimises this task reducing the time spent on creating my Curriculum Maps to just minutes.

Fortunately through this platform, I’m now able to make this tool accessible to all teachers and by including it FREE with every PPP membership plan, we estimate that we’re now helping to improve the delivery of PE education for up to half a million children in Britain.
